“I grew up in Virginia Beach, where beach art was everywhere — usually calm, realistic, and meant to match a rental house. I spent most of my life convinced that beach imagery could never be cool, let alone exciting from a stylistic point of view. For Beach Day, I wanted to see what would happen if I applied my own invented style — warped, theatrical, not based in realism — to a genre that’s usually pretty safe and expected. It felt maniacal at times, like trying to squeeze something chaotic into a polite frame, but that challenge became the whole point. This show is my attempt to turn beach art on its head, while still honoring the place that shaped me (even if I didn’t always fit the mold).” - Kevin Sabo
