Everett Leo Swinson (1956-1998) - Mitch and His Love for Life
“Mitch and His Love for Life” shows 2 figures.
Everette Leo Swinson (1956)-1998), a Norfolk Virginia artist who painted with oil pastels. This series of oil pastels on paper were from a time in Swinson’s life where he was diagnosed with HIV and living with AID’s in the early to late 90’s. The disease carried a lot of weight and social stigma and Everett expressed these through this series of works. After Everett passed in 1998 his friends held an auction raising funds by selling his art to help his mother pay for his funeral. These paintings were left over from the auction, stored rolled up in a friends closet until being recently discovered.
The vivid and bright colors depicting death, and the pain of living with HIV, bring a new look at the struggle Swinson was enduring on a daily basis. Alien like figures bring an ethereal out of this world feel to the paintings.
