Rare 1975 Robert Swain Geometric Color "Study for 7' x 7' Painting" Signed
A key figure in American color theory, Robert Swain (b. 1940, Austin, TX) is known for his vibrant, grid-based compositions. After studying fine art at The American University and spending time in Spain, Swain worked with Modernist painter Karl Knaths in Provincetown before settling in NYC’s Tribeca in 1965. He began his signature color-grid work in the mid-1960s, exhibiting at the influential Park Place Gallery in 1967. A mentee of sculptor Tony Smith, Swain has spent decades refining a unique color system still evolving today. This particular piece is a smaller study for a larger 7 foot painting.
